Epulis
Epulides are localised gingival swellings and rarely true neoplasms.
Clinical features
– Painless, exophytic, nodular mass usually pedunculated with a smooth or lobulated surface.
– The colour should be the same as the surrounding gingiva (fibrous epulis) or deep red (pyogenic/pregnancy granuloma) or purple-blue (giant cell granuloma).
Incidence
– Common.
Aetiology
– Local gingival irritation caused by calculus.
– Giant cell epulides may result from proliferation of giant cell persisting after resorption ofdeciduous teeth.
Diagnosis
– Excision biopsy, radiography.
Management
– Excision; remove irritants.
– Pregnancy epulides should be preferably excised post-partum if they persist.
