Sialosis
Clinical features
– Painless bilateral swelling, typically of parotids.
Incidence
– Uncommon.
Aetiology
– The common feature is autonomic neuropathy.
– Known causes include:
• Neurogenic:
various drugs such as isoprenaline
• Dystrophic-metabolic:
anorexia-bulimia, alcoholic cirrhosis, diabetes, malnutrition, thyroid disease,
acromegaly and pregnancy.
– The condition is frequently idiopathic.
Diagnosis
– Clinical.
– Blood glucose, liver function tests, possibly growth hormone levels.
Management
– Exclude and treat predisposing causes.
