Necrotising Sialometaplasia
Clinical features
– The initial lesion is a nodular swelling usually seen in the posterior part of the hard palate that later leads to a painful craterlike ulcer with irregular border.
Incidence
– Rare.
Aetiology
– Unknown.
– Biopsy is often required to differentiate from malignant salivary gland tumours and squamous cell carcinoma.
Management
– Reassurance. The lesions usually heal spontaneously without treatment over 4 to 10 weeks.
